  • In what counties does Florida grow rice?
    In Pam Beach County, primarily in the Everglades Agricultural area south of Lake Okeechobee.
  • Why are rice fields flooded?
    Rice fields are flooded to control weeds and other pests in addition to providing irrigation
  • What is so unique about rice farming on South Florida?
    The soils here are very high in organic matter called a Histosol. This is one on the only places in the United States rice is grown on this soil type. Our high temperatures and humidity along with abundant rainfall during the growing season create unique challenges for farmers.
  • Where does Florida rice get sold?
    We have one local rice mill Sem-Chi Rice owned by Florida Crystals. They process and package the rice to be sold under various brand names sold mostly in south and central Florida markets.
